WHY VOLUNTEER AT KAD SALA?

English Lessons and Community Development: We work with local people that have very limited access to English education. Our main goal is to make sure they are able to communicate with foreigners and open our community to the world. We need volunteers who have a passion for education and enjoy working with young children.

PROJECT – TEACHING ENGLISH

We are seeking volunteers to help increase access to English in our community in order to promote higher education, build vocational skills, and enhance career prospects among students.

Every weekday, as volunteers you’ll have the opportunity to teach English, provide support at local schools, and team up with other international volunteers in order to prepare classes and games for the kids to learn and practice English.

You don’t need to be qualified or an experienced teacher, we just expect you to be responsible and take this job seriously. The influence that international volunteers have on our community is major and it goes beyond the classroom. The cooperation between volunteers and teachers promotes cultural exchange and understanding as well as global awareness.

FREE TIME

After the scheduled classes and tasks you’ll have a lot of spare time that you can and should use to explore San Pa Tong! We provide a bicycle for you to borrow to see the area around and explore the local markets, schools and monasteries. The San Pa Tong city center is located about 15 minutes (by bicycle) from Kad Sala where you can get cheap meals, vegetables and fruit from the markets and street food.

For more information about what you can do in San Pa Tong click here.

A TYPICAL DAY IN KAD SALA

A typical day at Kad Sala (although everyday is a little different!) is:

◊ Wake up to the sounds of birds chirping and early rooster calls (no need for alarm clock!)

◊ Enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast in the fresh morning air – either in the cozy kitchen on the property or at some great local cafes within walking/biking distance

◊ Start volunteering around 9:30am, such as tidying up the common areas, sweeping, teaching English to the community children (on Sundays and possibly another week day), or other tasks that the hosts need help with. Sometime English classes go together with planting, uniting volunteers and local students in some new skills!

◊ Open the thrift store around around 10:00am, ensuring the store looks inviting and tidy for customers who come by to shop. It is time for practicing your thai listening skills and your bargaining spirit!

◊ Take some creative photos and videos of the clothes and handicrafts to help showcase these wonderful products on social media!

◊ After a few hours of volunteering, it’s time for lunch! Sometimes the hosts will cook a delicious meal for the volunteers. If you prefer you can go explore the many authentic restaurants that surround Kad Sala – either by foot or by bike! Every week there is at least one cooking class: cook your thai lunch guided by the expert host!

◊ After lunch, you typically have some hours to yourself – take a rest by a fan, read a book amongst the greenery, go exploring the beautiful neighbourhood by bike, shop in the thrift store for some great deals, stroll through the markets for authentic handcrafted goods, etc.

◊ In the late afternoon, you typically continue with a an hour/few more hours of volunteering – such as helping with the ‘Save Our Planet’ project by promoting the thrift store and helping to brainstorm marketing ideas for their online social media accounts. This takes just 1 hour. Depending on the day, the afternoon is spent at a local market so you are as asked to help loading the truck and set off for a new fun experience among local people!

◊ Time for dinner! Depending on the day, you can try a local restaurant with the other volunteers, explore a local market, or cook a meal in the kitchen provided. If it is a market day you are offered delicious snacks and dinner there!

◊ Put your feet up for the rest of the evening and relax 🙂

◊ On Mondays, day off! You can head to Chiang Mai for the day/night, explore the surrounding nature, hike nearby mountains, visit a monastery, etc. There are two national parks with monastries or temples on mountains’ peaks are worth seeing nearby and one close to Chiang Mai city, offering many experiences like waterfalls, nature trails and acquatic parks. For a different experience, take your bike offered by the hosts and explore the local countryside surrounded by people smiles, frutis trees and mountains: it’s heart-warming!
